McCarthy to start

Greetings from the press box at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City.

The big news, an hour before kickoff, is that senior Kip McCarthy will start at tailback for the Falcons. McCarthy, who picked up a career-high 129 yards last weekend, missed practice Monday and Tuesday with bursitis in his right knee. He went through limited work Wednesday with a brace and practiced Thursday with a brace.

On Wednesday, Air Force coach Troy Calhoun said senior Jim Ollis and freshman Savier Stephens would get the majority of the Falcons’ carries and that one of them probably would start.

But McCarthy will get the nod. However, he likely will not get as much work as he did last weekend when he carried the ball 22 times.

McCarthy currently is on the field with a brace on his knee. He seems to be moving well.
